It is well known that the 2007/2008 post election violence resulted in the displacement of large numbers of people across the country. It is estimated that 78,254 houses were burnt/destroyed and 663, 921 persons displaced. Of these internally displaced persons (IDPS) 350,000 settled in 118 refugee camps while 313,921 either returned to their homes of origin, settled in urban areas or found accommodation with their friends, relatives and well wishers. To date many of the IDPs from the camps have either returned to their homes or resettled in other areas through initiative of the government or well wishers, while their security remains fragile (there are reports of returnees who were killed or displaced immediately upon return) another major challenge is providing shelter. This is particularly of great concern during the current rainy season where there is real threat of exposure to cold weather and related diseases like pneumonia and malaria; and waterborne disease like cholera and typhoid in addition to usual refugee camp challenges especially insecurity. It’s notable to mention that, there has emerged a new type of IDP’s following the Mau forest relocation plans. What do we do to prevent this happening next time??
